In this ever-changing world of gig-economy, the freelancers are the ones who are benefiting as well as the ones who get harmed the most. We are here in conversation with Janhavi Mishra, a content writing freelancer. Janhavi is a college pass out who started her writing career side by side while studying in college. Today she will be talking about how freelancers get work and how can one get into the content writing industry right from when they are in college.

Since you are a freelancer, how do you think is this pandemic affecting your work pattern?

Honestly, the pandemic has got me more freelance work than usual. With everybody trying to reach out to the maximum number of people sitting at homes, copy-writing and SEO based content writing has drastically increased. Yes, many freelancers have indeed been knocked out of the game but trust me the freelancing world has seen blacker days as well.

So, Janhavi tell us what content writing services do you offer?

A freelancer has to be very flexible. I offer blog writing services for organizations email newsletters, graphical content, and social media marketing. My specialization would be SEO based content writing while my deep interest lies in creative writing. My forte is creating original, premium quality, and plagiarism free content. I believe that content is the backbone of a company’s digital presence.

Tell us more about how you ended up getting your first paid gig?

As I mentioned earlier, I had started writing while I was in college itself but I had never planned on becoming a content writer. The course that I was pursuing was completely different to what I am doing at the present. I had just started writing out short stories purely out of my hobby but I never thought that I could ever get paid for doing this. I had no idea when I had started writing about what content writing exactly was. I even didn’t have the slightest bit of an idea that I could get paid for my writing skills. With time I discovered more in this field and widened my horizons. My first paid gig was through a mutual connection on LinkedIn where I had applied directly for the position of a content writer. Before getting a paid gig, I started applying to a few content writing internships to make my profile look stronger.

How did you make your portfolio look so good?

Well, I had been applying to numerous internships through different platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Internshala, and many more. But all of my efforts were in vain because there were times when I would go unpaid for months. There were instances when these websites also failed to provide me with any new opportunity. So, then I decided to pursue more internships and improve my skills. This choice made me better off as compared to others and also helped me build my portfolio.

What factors should aspiring content writers consider before getting into this industry?

If you are an aspiring content writer and are looking for more opportunities, then you should make a profile on LinkedIn, Indeed, Internshala, and many more such websites. These have helped me in going ahead, I am sure they will to you as well. Also, the most important thing to keep in mind is, ‘Never stop writing’. It doesn’t matter which platform you choose and how many people read it.

Any parting thoughts or comments about freelancing or content writing in general?

This advice is not just for the freelancers but also for all the other people who are aspiring to enter the workforce in such unprecedented times. Things will surely take some time, don’t get discouraged when things don’t go the way that you expected them to be. These uncertain times are new for all of us, we can’t be ignorant towards it but we surely can adapt to it. The content writing industry has evolved over time so do we as freelancers. Make sure you grow exponentially to your full potential.

That’s all for today folks, stay tuned to this page (Bharvi Dani) for more such interesting content and vivid experiences to come your way.
