There are times in our lives when our dreams and ambitions take much longer to be fulfilled than expected. “Like Flowers in Sand” is one such story, portraying the journey of flowers that have bloomed late. It delivers an important message to viewers about not feeling rushed to achieve goals and embracing the struggle to bloom in life at the right time. The story follows the delightful journey of the revival of an old wrestling (ssireum) prodigy through his reunion with a childhood friend and the unravelling of past mysteries.

This K-drama leaves a lasting impression that lingers in the minds of viewers for a lifetime. Set in the quaint seaside city of Geosan province in South Korea, the story deeply impacts viewers with its compelling storyline and message. The narrative unfolds through a series of interconnected storylines, delving into the complexities of relationships and the choices individuals make during challenging times.

One of the most captivating aspects of the show is its richly developed characters, who feel remarkably authentic, each with their distinct dialects and relatable personalities. Every character contributes significantly to the storyline throughout the twelve episodes. The ensemble cast delivers stellar performances, immersing viewers in the emotional depths of their character journeys. The cinematography of “Like Flowers in Sand” is breathtaking, capturing the vibrant energy of a small fishery village while also portraying moments of quiet introspection. With the serene beauty of the seaside, each frame is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of belonging. The direction masterfully captures the economic activities of such fishing cities and their relative importance to the screenplay. A notable highlight of this drama is its melodious OSTs (Original Soundtracks) that complement the picturesque locations and the thrilling narrative. Among them, my favourite is “Pieces of Cloud” sung by Car, The Garden, which features meaningful lyrics and a soothing composition.

“Like Flowers in Sand” is a timeless tale of love and redemption, exploring themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, and the enduring power of human connection. It leaves behind a nostalgic fragrance of childhood friendship and prompts a thought-provoking exploration of empathy and compassion.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from the K-drama:

After failing the police exam four times, when he went to take the exam for the fifth time, Seokhee suddenly cried while wearing socks. At that time I thought he was crazy. But now I understand why; my family never gets tired of rooting for me even though I have never won a championship. Maybe Seokhee cried because he knew why.

How can I always make the right choice? Make the best choice out of all the options in front of you.

To her, it would have felt like living with one foot stuck in mud all her life. There’s nobody to help her out of the mud.

Every memory gets old.
